CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT

CALIFORNIA COURTS OF APPEAL

The California Courts of Appeal review decisions made by trial courts to ensure the law was correctly applied and legal procedures were properly followed. They serve as the intermediate appellate courts in the state, handling the vast majority of appeals in civil, criminal, and juvenile cases. These courts are divided geographically into six districts, each with jurisdiction over cases originating in specific counties. (You can find your district by entering the zip code, city, or county of your trial court case HERE.)

CALIFORNIA INMATE LOCATOR TOOL

The California Incarcerated Records & Information Search (CIRIS) system is the official inmate locator tool operated by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). It is accessible at https://ciris.mt.cdcr.ca.gov/search. The CIRIS allows users to search for the location of individuals currently in state prison custody by providing the inmate’s name or CDCR number. The tool provides a link to the institution's website where the inmate is currently housed.

APPELLATE CASE INFORMATION TOOL

Appellatecases.courtinfo.ca.gov is the official Appellate Case Information System for the California Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal, providing public access to the status and history of appellate cases. Information includes case captions, document filing due dates and filing dates, oral argument schedules, and court opinions. Case information can be found by appellate case number, trial case number, case caption, and attorney or party name. One can also sign up to receive automatic email notifications of specific case activity.

COURT-APPOINTED COUNSEL PROGRAM

The Court-Appointed Counsel (CAC) Program--a program of the Judicial Council of California--fulfills the constitutional mandate of providing adequate representation for indigent parties in the Courts of Appeal in noncapital cases. The Judicial Council staff works with nonprofit organizations ("projects") that recommend to the Courts of Appeal the appointment of private attorneys to represent indigent parties in criminal and juvenile matters.

APPELLATE PROJECTS

The “projects” within the Judicial Council’s Court-Appointed Counsel Program are nonprofit organizations that partner with the Courts of Appeal to recruit, train, supervise, and recommend private attorneys for appointment to represent indigent parties in criminal and juvenile appellate matters. These projects serve each of the state’s appellate districts, functioning as essential intermediaries that ensure qualified counsel is appointed in non‑capital appeals.
